Star Wars Force Trainer in action

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

What kid hasn’t lain in bed at night and tried to transport some object to them using just the power of their mind, just to see if maybe that Force thing was actually real? I’ll admit I did. Of course nothing happened, but a new toy is designed to give players the feeling that they do have the Force flowing through them by harnessing brainwaves to "levitate" a ball.

The Star Wars licensed Force Trainer from Uncle Milton uses a wireless headset that reads alpha and beta waves via electroencephalography (EEG) technology. Alpha and Beta waves are the names given to electrical activity in the brain between 7.5 and 30Hz - depending on which classification you read - which for the purposes of the game identifies when you are relaxed and concentrated.

When the player achieves this Jedi-like state of inner calm a fan at the bottom of the unit kicks-in and a ball rises up a clear plastic tower giving the player the sense that they are indeed manipulating the Force. With a little encouragement from Yoda players then move through different levels of difficulty to achieve Jedi Master status. Given that calmness and relaxation is the winner, this is one game you would let the kids play before bed.

Gizmag’s resident Jedi Master Loz Blain got a first hand look at the Force Trainer at the Australian Toy Hobby and Nursery Fair and put his Jedi skills to the test. Check out the vid to see him in action and learn more about how the Force Trainer works from Uncle Milton's Dodd Harris.

Digital Pot turns your plants into pets

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

It’s not as attractive as classic terracotta, but this 21st century pot plant could be big news for the sad looking greenery in the corner of your office or apartment.

Designed by Junyi Heo, the Digital Pot takes the guesswork out of keeping your plants healthy by expressing on an LCD display exactly how they are feeling and what they need from you. The various icons that can appear on the screen of the pot have corresponding meanings ranging from “normal” and “dissatisfied” to “more water” and “danger”. The system works by measuring the soil conditions, temperature, humidity, and water in the pot and calculating the variables to express the plant’s condition in facial symbols.

Plants can suffer from over watering, as much as under watering, so the pot also automatically drains excess water if you get a bit too enthusiastic with the watering can. To recharge the Digital Pot and to receive information about your plant via software, it can easily be connected to your computer using the USB connection and cable included. This is one gift idea sure to be a hit with anyone lacking a green thumb.

Light Up Boomerang Makes For Cool Pictures

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

The Scimitar is a boomerang fitted with LED lights, designed by toy loving Eric Darnell. Although it's not the traditional boomerang shape, it's still pretty cool. And it makes for neat pictures if you leave the shutter open long enough. They're easy to throw, but freaking near impossible to have come back.
