SolarCats

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

This so-called solarcat is actually a solar battery. Oh, no, it is not the traditionally solar battery; instead, it is a solar powered rechargeable battery.

In order to charge the rechargeable battery, we usually have to buy an additional charger, but this one can charge itself without any extra device. Thanks to the flexible solar panels skin, this solarcat can be recharged just by bathing in the sunglight.

Moki Mobile Kitchen designed for campers

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

There is something very special about camp cooking. Everything just seems to taste so very good while camping! For the folks who love to lick their fingers from self-made cuisine, even al-fresco, Moki Mobile Kitchen is apt for them. At first glance, this ultimate camping kitchen looks like a big suitcase on wheels. But once put it to work, this kitchen will flaunt its true colors…..or should I say true functions. It is ingeniously designed to allow you to carry your stuff along and cook too. Consisting of four detachable parts, each one has a purpose to it.

All this along with an integrated (yet removable) table, umbrella makes it a must for campers seeking a bit of more eating comforts on their excursions.

Redneck Mansion: Too Good To Be True

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

I knew when I saw these pictures they were too good to be true. And sadly, they are. I had to do some interweb spelunking but, finally, got to the bottom of their origin. Touted around the net as a "redneck mansion", the structure was actually the set for a performance of Anton Chekhov's play Ivanov at an outdoor theater in Amsterdam. So yeah, shit. Still an awesome setup though, I'd totally live there. Anybody want to get together and build something similar? I'm thinking something like an Ewok village in the trees, but with double-wides. Who's with me? Also, I apologize to all of those who had their hopes up for this being a real redneck mansion. Believe me, I was right there with you. This is the second time in 24 hours I've been tricked into thinking something was something that it's not. The first being the dude still asleep in my bed.

Zero Emission House

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has released a few details about the “Zero Emission House,” a state-of-the-art green home under construction at the site of the upcoming Hokkaido Toyako G8 Summit, where environmental issues will be high on the agenda.

Incorporating the latest in sustainable building technology, the 280-square-meter (3,000 sq ft) Japanese-style home is designed to have a small carbon footprint. A 14.5-kilowatt solar array and a small 1-kilowatt wind generator provide power to the home, which is equipped with next-generation energy-saving appliances, thermal insulation glass, vacuum insulated panels and a green roof. The interior is illuminated by a system of light ducts and OLED lamps.

Fog & Dew Collectors for clean drinking water

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

Alon Alex Gross’s fog and dew collectors provide a low-tech way for people in arid, developing regions to collect drinking water. Gross uses design to show users how individuals can come up with their own answers to ecological and technical problems. His method fuses the ancient methods of fog harvesting and dew collection with modern improvements such as super light materials and internet connectivity.

Manned Cloud

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

Here’s another designer dirigible: Manned Cloud is a flying hotel

Manned Cloud is an alternative project around leisure and travelling in all its form, economic and experimental, still with the idea of lightness, human experience and life scenarios as the guiding principles. The spiral of Archimedes is the driving force of this airship in the form of a whale that glides through the air.

Outdoor solar workstation

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

If you are having trouble getting out of the office, maybe it's time to get the office out. This funky, eco-friendly workspace by Mathias Schnyder is designed to be a calming haven where office dwellers or uni students can escape to the great outdoors.

The modular workstation comes equipped with a solar cell in the roof that can generate enough energy to power a notebook via an electric socket in the center of the table. The seating comprises different movable segments so people can sit next to each other or across from each other if they need privacy. Additionally, the seating design means users can reduce exposure to wind and sun.

Its materials and form mean this workstation would sit well in a city park (where it might be mistaken for playground equipment), office lawn or on a college campus - any urban outdoor setting really. No details yet on whether the design will see a commercial release, but any concept that combines fresh air, productivity and green energy deserves applause.

Digital Pot turns your plants into pets

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

It’s not as attractive as classic terracotta, but this 21st century pot plant could be big news for the sad looking greenery in the corner of your office or apartment.

Designed by Junyi Heo, the Digital Pot takes the guesswork out of keeping your plants healthy by expressing on an LCD display exactly how they are feeling and what they need from you. The various icons that can appear on the screen of the pot have corresponding meanings ranging from “normal” and “dissatisfied” to “more water” and “danger”. The system works by measuring the soil conditions, temperature, humidity, and water in the pot and calculating the variables to express the plant’s condition in facial symbols.

Plants can suffer from over watering, as much as under watering, so the pot also automatically drains excess water if you get a bit too enthusiastic with the watering can. To recharge the Digital Pot and to receive information about your plant via software, it can easily be connected to your computer using the USB connection and cable included. This is one gift idea sure to be a hit with anyone lacking a green thumb.

A battery-free remote control

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

SMK has a prototype TV remote that tosses out the batteries, relying on kinetic energy instead to work.

According to the literature, the channels, volume control and On/Off power switch are controlled by working a trigger on the handle. When pulled, an electromagnetic induction coil rotates at high speed by means of gears. This, in turn, generates a current of 20-30mA--sufficient to change the channel via infrared light. Two consecutive pulls will turn the TV on or off, while volume control is activated by pulling the trigger and pushing a button simultaneously

Solar Powered Bicycle Is Great, Heavy

Posted by EscapeDigitalMedia

The E-V Sunny Solar Bicycle has solar panels built into the wheels, which maintain a constant charge to the batteries. When you don't feel like pedaling the bike is powered by a 500 watt front hub motor. It'll get you up to about 18 mph, and even faster if you fall off a cliff. The catch is that it weighs 75 lbs., so you're gonna need to use that motor unless you have legs like mighty oaks. A new one costs $1295, and kits to solarize your own bike start at $795. I remember the first time I got on a bike and realized that you have to pedal them to go. What a letdown that was. I thought they were silent motorcycles for people who weren't into wearing leather.
